Cyber Attack, March 05, 2018

On Monday, March 05, 2018, White County Schools’ Computer Systems were attacked by a foreign “ransomware worm”. The attack was discovered early Monday morning and involved an attempt to infect and take control of several of the system’s mission critical software programs and staff individual Windows machines. Our technology staff halted the attacks, shut down our systems and began the process of determining the extent of the attack. No student or staff personal information was compromised.  A recent cyber security report found that cyber criminals are increasingly targeting schools attempting to hold school data for ransom. Superintendent Jeff Wilson stated, “Our technology staff did a great job halting the attack, keeping the impact from spreading. We have a strong firewall and will continue to investigate ways to thwart such attacks. Unfortunately, the bad guys have access to tools that make that job very difficult. We will stay vigilant.”
